Our work in policy aims to inform and influence key decision makers across Government, its agencies are other organisations. We do this by working closely with BSR members and patients to shape how policy is developed and to raise awareness of issues of importance in rheumatology.

Audits

The national clinical audit for rhuematoid and early inflammatory arthrisit examined the assessment of newly diagnosed patients against NICE standrads. Its purpose was to help clinicians improve their quality of care for patients and facilitate negotiations with their employers and commissioners to improve services.

Registers

BSR runs two registers of patients receiving standards and biologics treatment for rhuematoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. the data collected generates vital evidenec of long term patient safety and treatment efficiency.

Lobbying

We work with parliamentaries to inform them of important issues for people living with rhuematic and muscoskeletal conditions and those delivering their care. We do this by:

  • producing written briefings to inform parliamentarians
  • arranging meetings with them to raise awareness of key issues
  • encouraging them to raise parliamentary questions, debates and to host receptions
  • repsonding to parliamentary inquiries and consultations
  • Speaking at relevant events hosted in parliament and at political pary conferences
  • Arranging visits to local services to better understand challenges facing clinicians and patients

Standards

Peer review

BSR launced a new peer review process in 2016 in order to drive local service improvements and provide a formative mechanism to assess whether services meet core standards across the UK

Best practice

BSR launched its Best Practice Awards in 2013 to reward excleence and endeavour in rhuematology services, and to gather information on these services to inform future service development.
